Sporting celebrates at Lisbon City Hall but Carlos Moedas is booed

The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, was booed during practically the entire speech he gave at today's reception for two-time national football champion Sporting, who he praised for Saturday's victory.
“I am so proud to be here with you. (...) You have proven that Sporting is one of the greatest institutions in the world. When 'mister' Rui Borges arrived, he said: 'when inspiration is lacking, don't lack attitude', and that is what you have: attitude” , he declared.
Moedas took a long time to start speaking, given the boos from the thousands of 'leonino' fans in Praça do Município, and the mayor, in fact, asked several times to speak, without success.
At one point, he was silenced by 'leonine' chants, preventing the mayor from speaking, and when he resumed speaking, he continued to be booed, continuing his speech above the boos.
Later, Sporting president Frederico Varandas sought to support Moedas regarding the restrictions on the party, highlighting the collaboration with the local authority and security forces in the preparations.
Moedas stressed “attitude” as a summary of the season, “even when everything seemed impossible, when doubts multiplied”. “Even then, you never lacked attitude”, he highlighted, addressing the players.
Among individual praise, in a “season that was also passionate”, he recalled a “passionate” Sporting fan called Morten Hjulmand, the team captain, whom he praised for his “great leadership”.
“Your leadership helped the team overcome, just as Viktor Gyökeres surpassed his own records,” he commented.
Eduardo Quaresma's goal against Gil Vicente, other decisive goals on the journey, as well as the memory of 'glories' such as Manuel Fernandes, Yazalde or Peyroteo, Nani's “passion” for his former club, were evoked by a difficult speech by the mayor, such was the noise of the crowd in front of him.
The mayor then handed over a statuette of Saint Anthony to the Danish, already a tradition at these receptions, and the local authority received a shirt marking the two-time championship with the name Moedas.
“As someone once said, there are no flowery paths that lead to glory. This team was proof of that. President, you are the pride of the city, of the country,” he concluded.
Sporting were crowned two-time champions on Saturday, after beating Vitória de Guimarães at home (2-0), on the 34th and final matchday of the I Liga, winning the title for the 21st time in their history.
At the José Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon, the 'lions', who only depended on themselves to secure the title, scored through Pedro Gonçalves in the 55th minute, with Swede Viktor Gyökeres extending the lead in the 82nd minute, scoring his 39th goal of the competition, of which he was the top scorer.
Rui Borges' team finished the 91st edition of the championship in first place, with 82 points, and sealed their third title in five years, followed on Sunday by the Portuguese Cup final, against Benfica, second in the I Liga, with 80 points.
