Nuno Borges breaks the world's top 20 and makes his debut in the second round

Portuguese Nuno Borges today eliminated Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, world number 19, to secure access to the second round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career, the third major of the season, taking place at the All England Club.
On his return to the London grass, for the fourth consecutive year, the tennis player from Maia, 37th in the ATP ranking, did not even start off on the right foot and found himself at a disadvantage in the first game, when he suffered a break, but he managed to recover and turn around an opponent who had defeated him in 2023 to, with the scores of 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and 6-0, secure his first triumph in London.
Just when it seemed he was on track to relive the opening match of two years ago, the 28-year-old national number one broke Cerundolo twice in the second game and restored parity, keeping the goal of staying in the competition alive.
In a very balanced third set, Nuno Borges, after suffering a break in the ninth game and immediately giving up his service game, only managed to get the better of the match in the tie-break, by converting the third set point he had, thus taking the lead in a match full of good and fast plays.
With the ascendancy on his side and motivated to break the bad streak in the only Grand Slam tournament in which he had never celebrated a triumph, the tennis player from the High Performance Centre of the Portuguese Tennis Federation raised the level and, without giving Cerundolo much of a chance, ended the arm wrestling after two hours and 28 minutes.
With 24 winners and 27 unforced errors, compared to his opponent's 30 winning points and 54 unprovoked faults, Nuno Borges celebrated his first victory in the main singles draw at Wimbledon, registering his fourth triumph against a top 20 player this season, and his seventh in his career.
In the next round, the Portuguese number one will face the winner of the clash between the British Billy Harris, who was awarded a 'wild card' for the main draw, and the Serbian 'lucky loser' Dusan Lajovic.
