Government prepares national plan for energy storage

Government prepares national plan for energy storage

The Minister of Environment and Energy said this Monday that she will present a set of measures in response to the blackout in the electricity grid on April 28 and ruled out the scenario of anomalies with the increase in consumption due to high temperatures.

“We are preparing a set of measures to present on July 28, although we do not yet have the final report with the causes of the blackout”, declared Maria da Graça Carvalho on the sidelines of a visit to the protection works of Baixo Vouga Lagunar, within the scope of the Congress of the Region of Aveiro.

The minister indicated that the Government intends to increase electricity storage capacity, and is therefore working on a “national storage plan”, which, she added, could include both chemical storage, through batteries, and hydroelectric storage, through the capacity of dams.

Another measure to be presented consists of changes to the electricity grid control systems , with greater computerization and use of data, creating “a single data collection system”.

When asked by journalists about the high temperatures, Graça Carvalho said that “also in the energy sector, when there are heat peaks, special attention must be paid to supply”.

“There is often an increase in demand for energy due to air conditioning units ,” he said, expressing confidence that REN and E-REDES, which is responsible for distribution, have all the technical capacity to withstand these current challenges.”

“There is also all the prevention in relation to fires and, therefore, there is a general alert from all ministries related to these matters to be vigilant,” he added.
