Walery Kosyl, one of the greatest goaltenders in the history of Polish ice hockey and an Olympian in Sapporo (1972) and Innsbruck (1976), has died at the age of 81. He spent almost his entire career with ŁKS Łódź.

The death of the legendary goalkeeper associated with the Łódź club was announced on Saturday by Jacek Bogusiak, custodian of the traditions of the Łódź Sports Club.

In total, he appeared in 559 league matches in 20 seasons. He became famous for scoring a goal... from open play. He won the Polish championship title and a runner-up finish with Legia (1966-67) and a bronze medal with ŁKS (1971).

He played 137 matches for the Polish national team between 1964 and 1976. He also played with the national team in two Olympic tournaments – in Sapporo (1972) and Innsbruck (1976), and in seven World Championships.

After retiring from playing, he was the coach of the first team of ŁKS and also trained juniors at the Łódź Sports Centre and the Łódź Hockey Club, which organizes the Kosyl Cup youth tournament.
