Great emotions in the derby! GKS Katowice defeated by Piast
Piast Gliwice, the current "red lantern" of the Ekstraklasa, came to Katowice with a clear goal: to break their losing streak and earn valuable points. It must be said that they executed their plan masterfully!
From the very first whistle, the visitors from Gliwice dictated the tempo of the game. In the 22nd minute, Igor Drapiński capitalized on confusion in the penalty area after a throw-in to open the scoring. A few minutes later, an unfortunate own goal by Lukas Klemenz extended Piast's advantage. GKS attempted to respond, but their efforts were met with either off-target shots or effective saves from Frantisek Plach. Late in the first half, the hosts had a chance to pull one back – after Jakub Lewicki fouled Adam Zrelak, the referee awarded a penalty, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.
In the second half, GKS Katowice attempted to close the gap, but despite dominating possession, they were unable to break Piast's defense. "Gliwice focused on controlling the tempo of the game and maintaining a favorable result," reports Przegląd Sportowy Onet. In the 71st minute, Erik Jirka capitalized on a counterattack, extending the visitors' lead to 3-0. The home side's consolation goal came in the final minute, courtesy of a shot by Lukas Klemenz.
With the win, Piast Gliwice moved up to second-to-last place in the table, overtaking Termalica Bruk-Bet Nieciecza. Despite the defeat, GKS Katowice remains four points clear of the relegation zone.
