While HSV fans stormed the pitch in the stadium following their Bundesliga promotion, the situation escalated outside the stadium as well. Videos by FOCUS-online editor Carsten Baumgardt show the extent of the crush.
Already at the beginning of the second half, fans lit loud firecrackers outside the entrance to the north curve, the HSV fan block.
At 10:05 p.m., several hundred fans attempted to storm the stadium, climbing over the perimeter fences, but were then mostly stopped by police and stewards. For now.
At 10:22 p.m., all the dams broke: The fans, who had been kept at bay between the outer fence and the inner barrier, pushed aside the police officers, who could no longer withstand the pressure. Whether the game was already over or still had a few minutes to go was unclear.
