Real Madrid signs Álvaro Carreras from Benfica for 50 million euros

Left-back Álvaro Carreras will play for the next six seasons for Real Madrid, who signed the Spanish footballer from Benfica for 50 million euros, the clubs announced today.
“Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD informs that it has reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the sale of all rights to the player Álvaro Carreras, for an amount of 50 million euros”, reads the statement sent to the Securities Market Commission (CMVM).
The Spanish under-21 international joined the Merengues after a season and a half with the 'encarnados', a period in which he scored five goals in 68 games played, having won a League Cup.
Álvaro Carreras, 22, arrived at Benfica in January 2024, on loan from English club Manchester United, who had already loaned him out at the beginning of that season to Granada and, in the previous season, to Preston North End.
In June 2024, he signed a five-year contract, until June 30, 2029, with the Lisbon club, who paid around six million euros for his transfer, with the club coached by Ruben Amorim having the right of first refusal on a future transfer, which they did not activate.
The defender, who joined the Red Devils as a junior, returns to the Spanish capital club, where he completed his training at Galician side Deportivo, to join the squad led by Xabi Alonso.
Real Madrid finished the last edition of the Spanish League in second place, four points behind champions FC Barcelona.
The full-back will be presented as a Merengues player on Tuesday, from 1:00 pm local time (12:00 pm in Lisbon), at Real Madrid City.
