Portugal beats Italy in the European Under-17 Championship

Portugal began today the defense of its title in the European men's under-17 roller hockey championship with a victory over Italy (2-1), in the opening round of Group A of the first phase, in Gujan-Mestras, France. Afonso Oliveira, in the 37th minute, and Martim Oliveira, in the 40th, scored the goals for the Portuguese team, holders of 15 titles and 42 podiums heading into the 43rd edition of the competition, while Lorenzo Benvenuti reduced the deficit for the transalpine team, six-time champions, in the 43rd. Portugal provisionally isolated itself at the top of Group A, with three points, compared to none for Italy, on a day in which Spain, the record holder for victories with 22, will still face hosts France, the Portuguese's next opponent, on Tuesday.
Hours earlier, also in Gujan-Mestras, the women's national team, champion in 2023 and defeated finalist in 2024, had started the third edition of the European Championship with a defeat against Italy (2-1).
