Press hails Sinner as 'king' after Wimbledon win

The Italian and international press paid tribute to world number 1 Jannik Sinner on Monday (14) after he defeated Carlos Alcaraz 3 sets to 1 and became the first Italian tennis player to win a singles title at Wimbledon.

"His Majesty Sinner," reads the front-page headline of sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, while Corriere dello Sport called the 23-year-old "The King," and Tuttosport called him a "Legend."

Corriere della Sera, Italy's leading newspaper, said on its front page that Sinner "made history" and became "the first Italian king of Wimbledon." Similarly, the Roman daily la Repubblica stated that "Sinner is in history" as the "first Italian to win the trophy."

Still in Italy, La Stampa newspaper crowned the tennis player "King of the World." In the UK, The Guardian highlighted Sinner's ability to bounce back after his painful loss to Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final.

"Sinner's redemption," the British newspaper wrote, adding that the Wimbledon result "adds a new dimension to a rivalry that looks set to decide most of the major tournaments in the near future."

The tabloid The Sun, also from the United Kingdom, used a play on words to report the Italian tennis player's triumph: "From sinner to winner," in reference to the world number 1's three-month suspension in a doping case.

Photos of the Italian's victory also appeared on the front pages of Monday's editions of The Times, The Washington Post and The New York Times, among others.
