This is Portugal's first medal at the Canoeing World Championships taking place in Milan

Canoeists Gustavo Gonçalves, João Ribeiro, Messias Baptista and Pedro Casinha were crowned K4 500 meter World Champions today in Milan.

Starting on lane six, the Portuguese quartet, who were crowned European champions in June, completed their race in 1:18.93 minutes, beating Hungary by five hundredths of a second and Spain by 40.

This is Portugal's first medal at the Milan World Championships, where João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista are also defending their K2 500m title and Fernando Pimenta is defending his gold in K1 1,000m.
