Canoeists Gustavo Gonçalves, João Ribeiro, Messias Baptista, and Pedro Casinha were crowned K4 500-meter World Champions today in Milan. Starting in lane six, the Portuguese quartet, who were crowned European champions in June, completed their race in 1:18.93 minutes, beating Hungary by five hundredths of a second and Spain by 40. This is Portugal's first medal at the Milan World Championships, where João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista are also defending their K2 500-meter title, and Fernando Pimenta is defending his gold in the K1 1,000.
