João Almeida wins stage and moves up to second in the Tour of Switzerland

João Almeida (UAE Emirates) today won the seventh stage of the Tour of Switzerland in a sprint, repeating his triumph from the fourth stage, and rose to second place in the overall classification, 33 seconds behind French leader Kevin Vauquelin (Arkéa). João Almeida, who heads into the final stage tomorrow, contested against the clock, with the aim of eliminating the disadvantage to Vauquelin and taking the yellow jersey, completed the 207.3 kilometres between Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Emmetten in 4:38.25 hours. Briton Oscar Onley (Team Picnic PostNL) finished second on the stage, ahead of Kévin Vauquelin, who has been wearing the leader's badge for three days and who launched an attack and accelerated about 350 meters from the uphill finish. “My team did a great job on a difficult stage. Every second is important [they gained six on the leader], but nothing is decided yet. Tomorrow [Sunday] will be very tough,” João Almeida told Eurosport at the end of the stage.
Kevin Vauquelin leads the overall standings with 29:00.55 hours, 33 seconds ahead of João Almeida and 41 seconds ahead of his compatriot Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor), who was fifth on this stage. The race ends this Sunday, between Beckenried and Stockhütte, with a ten-kilometre “time trial”.
