Pete Rose and Joe Jackson will be eligible for the Hall of Fame

New York. Pete Rose and Joe Jackson were reinstated yesterday by Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, making them eligible for the Cooperstown Hall of Fame after their careers were marred by sports gambling scandals.

Rose's permanent ban was lifted eight months after his death and came one day before the Cincinnati Reds honored baseball's all-time hits leader with Pete Rose Night.

Manfred announced the change in MLB's policy on permanent ineligibility by explaining that the bans would expire after death. Under current Hall of Fame rules, the earliest Rose or Jackson could be inducted would be 2028.

A 17-time All-Star during his playing career from 1963-86, Rose holds the record for hits (4,256), games (3,562), at-bats (14,053), plate appearances (15,890) and singles (3,215). He was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1963, MVP in 1973, and World Series MVP in 1975.

Jackson was among eight Chicago White Sox players sanctioned for fixing the 1919 World Series. Others whose status will also be changed by the ruling include Williams D. Cox, former president of the Philadelphia Phillies, and Benny Kauff, former New York Giants outfielder.

Rose agreed to a permanent ban with then-Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti on August 23, 1989, after an investigation commissioned by Major League Baseball concluded that he repeatedly bet on the Reds as both a player and manager from 1985 to 1987.

The Cincinnati Reds player first applied for reinstatement in September 1997, but Commissioner Bud Selig never acted on the request. In 2025, Manfred rejected a petition for reinstatement, saying that “Rose has not presented credible evidence of having reconfigured his life.”

Rose died on September 30, 2024, at the age of 83.

Marcus Giamatti, son of the former commissioner who signed the agreement banning Rose, said in a statement that he was incredibly disappointed with Manfred's decision.

It's a very dark day for baseball, the country, and the fans.
