Norris and Piastri relive the Hamilton-Button war at McLaren: two almost identical conflicts separated by 14 years.

Norris and Piastri relive the Hamilton-Button war at McLaren: two almost identical conflicts separated by 14 years.

Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris had a clash in the closing laps of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. While fighting for fourth place, the Briton hit his teammate's car, in an action extremely similar to the one seen exactly 14 years earlier, at the same point on the circuit , and again with both McLaren drivers involved.

In the closing laps, the Papaya team reached Kimi Antonelli, who was third, but the time lost to a group of backmarkers gave the Italian some breathing room. Norris took advantage of the situation to charge at his teammate, and after a kilometer-long parallel, he tried to go for the inside at the first corner, but miscalculated, clipped Piastri's diffuser, and crashed into the wall right at the finish line . "It's my fault," he said over the radio before abandoning his battered MCL39.

The incident has not only unleashed a wave of criticism of Lando Norris, but also of the stewards , for imposing a penalty that affects his classification in the Canadian GP, which he did not finish, instead of carrying it over to the next round, and for not deducting points from his superlicense, as is customary in a collision of this magnitude.

But the accident is also surprising because it is practically identical to one that occurred at the same point on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 2011, precisely with both McLaren drivers involved, although on that occasion it was Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton who were the protagonists.

On lap 8 of the longest race in Formula 1 history (over four hours), Hamilton attempted to overtake Button on the home straight, but the now Ferrari driver ended up with rear suspension damage and no front wing , forcing him to retire. His teammate damaged his car after taking out Fernando Alonso, forced to stop four times and undergo a drive-through, and still won the race thanks to a major error by Sebastian Vettel.
