Almeyda arrives in the Spanish league

Matías Almeyda, who managed AEK Athens for the last three seasons, has signed with Sevilla to become its new manager for the next three seasons.

"Sevilla FC has reached an agreement with Matías Almeyda for the Argentine coach to become the new manager of the Red and Whites for the next three seasons, starting in July," the Andalusian club announced yesterday in a statement.

Almeyda had already had a brief first spell, lasting just one year, at Sevilla, where he arrived at the age of 22 as a River Plate star, but it was far from fruitful.

The 51-year-old Argentine began his coaching career just after retiring in the 2011-12 season with River Plate, returning him to the Argentine First Division. After his 60-match spell at the helm of Millonario, he managed Banfield, where he remained until 2015, making a total of 101 appearances, and also receiving promotion in 2013-14, Sevilla notes in its statement.

In 2015-16 he left for Chivas, a club where he enjoyed a successful period that lasted three seasons (147 matches) in which he was champion of the 2017 Clausura Tournament, twice champion of the Copa MX (Apertura 2015 and Clausura 2017) and the Super Cup in the 2015-2016 campaign. In addition, he was crowned champion of the CONCACAF Champions League in the 2017-18 season, defeating Toronto FC in the final.

In 2019, before making the jump to Europe, he managed in the MLS until 2022, specifically the San Jose Earthquakes, where he was in charge for 103 matches.— AP
