Scottie Scheffler wins the British Open, one of golf's most prestigious tournaments. Superstar Bryson DeChambeau pays tribute – and recalls that the new victor used to be anything but scary.
Of course, his young son couldn't be missing from the moment of great triumph. Scottie Scheffler proudly carried his Bennett around Royal Portrush Golf Club and showed him the "Claret Jug," which had already been engraved with the name of the best golf professional of our time as the newly crowned British Open champion.
Scheffler had to drop his son off for the winner's interview, but he used the time to take a close look at the trophy on unsteady feet. "It's a very special feeling. It's been a great week and it's been a lot of fun playing here," said Scheffler after his first victory at the prestigious major, addressing his family with emotional words: "I couldn't do this without you. I love you very much. I can hardly wait to get home and celebrate."
The 29-year-old was out of reach for the competition throughout the tournament, with fellow countryman Harris English already four strokes behind in second place. Rory McIlroy, who had hoped for a triumph at the tournament in his Northern Irish homeland, finished in a shared seventh place, seven strokes behind – and blithely acknowledged Scheffler's superiority.
"Really impressive""He's been on a whole other level, not just here this week, but in recent years. He's a well-deserved champion," said McIlroy. US pro Bryson DeChambeau echoed this sentiment. "Scottie is in a league of his own right now. I played with him a lot in college, and he wasn't particularly good. He's learned a lot since then. That's really impressive, and we can all learn from that," said the tenth-place finisher.
Scheffler, Olympic champion at Paris 2024, received prize money of $3.1 million (approximately €2.67 million). For the world number one, it was his eleventh consecutive tournament finish among the top ten—four of which he won.
