Long-serving Limerick football centre back Iain Corbett has announced his inter-county retirement after 14 years in the green and white.

The 33-year-old Newcastle West clubman’s decision comes after Limerick were edged out by Kildare in last month’s Tailteann Cup final. They won Division 4 of the Allianz League earlier in the season, beating Wexford in the final.

“Not all stories have happy endings,” Corbett wrote in an Instagram post which was accompanied by a series of photos from this season.

Paying tribute to the retiring stalwart on X, Limerick manager Jimmy Lee said: “It’s been an honour to be part of your journey. Hats off to you Iain. You have inspired your team mates, and the next generation to come. You have left the jersey in a better place. Legend.”

Corbett was nominated for an All-Star in 2020, while he was also joint-captain of the Limerick team that contested the Munster SFC final in 2022 and secured promotion to Division 2 of the Allianz League.
