Newcastle star Anthony Gordon has issued a 'sincere apology' for his red card against Liverpool - which Alan Shearer had no arguments with. Gordon, 24, caught the back of Virgil van Dijk's calf with his studs as he attempted to close down Liverpool's captain during Monday's Premier League clash.

The England international was initially shown a yellow card before a VAR check took place with just seconds of the first half remaining. Referee Simon Hooper upgraded his decision to red after looking at the incident on the pitch-side monitor, leaving Newcastle with 10 men.

A debate quickly ensued as to whether Gordon received the correct punishment. But club legend Shearer, who was in the stands, was in no doubt and posted on X: "What a stupid challenge man. It's a red card all day."

Gordon, whose side were already 1-0 down at the time of his sending off, saw Newcastle concede a second goal less than a minute into the second half. The Magpies put up a valiant effort and mounted an incredible second-half comeback, only for Liverpool wonderkid Rio Ngumoha to make it 3-2 deep into stoppage time.

Following the heartbreaking defeat, Gordon took to Instagram and released a statement. "I want to sincerely apologise to my teammates and the fans," he began.

"My intentions were pure. I was just trying to create energy in the game and I mistimed the tackle. I also want to apologise to Virgil, I would never intend to tackle somebody like this on purpose. We spoke after and he knows that.

"More importantly, I'm so proud of the time I spent on the pitch and how we played tonight. The atmosphere from you all is what makes SJP so special.

"I love everything we stand for as a club and no more than right now. I'll be back and better, the same as every other setback I've ever faced. See you soon."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe thought that Gordon was 'slightly unlucky' to be shown a red card after watching one replay of the challenge before the start of the second half. "I think there's no intent and he's gone in, of course, probably too quickly," Howe said post-match.

"I think he's tried to pull out and not commit any damage to Virgil as he's gone in to slide. It's an unfortunate one, I think he's slightly unlucky with it.

"Everyone's told me it's a clear red. My first opinion was slightly different but maybe I've got the wrong angle, so I've got sympathy for him.".
