Mads Pedersen wins opening stage and is the first leader

Danish cyclist Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) today became the first leader of the 108th edition of the Giro d'Italia, after winning the first stage in a sprint, which took place in Albania.

After the 160 kilometres between Durrës and Tirana, Pedersen won in 3:36.24 hours, the same time as Belgian Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a bike) and Venezuelan Orluis Aular (Movistar), second and third respectively.

Overall, thanks to bonuses, Pedersen has a four-second lead over Van Aert and six over Aular.

On Saturday, still on Albanian territory, the second stage of the Giro will take place, with a 12.7-kilometre individual time trial in the capital Tirana.
