Jorge Manuel Amaral Silvério is the new Ombudsman for Ethics in Sports

Jorge Manuel Amaral Silvério is the new Ombudsman for Ethics in Sports

He succeeds the philosopher, professor, educator, activist, and writer, Manuel Sérgio, who passed away in February of this year, and was recognized as one of the most innovative sports thinkers in Portugal.

The new Ombudsman has an excellent academic and professional background. Jorge Silvério has a degree in Psychology, a Master's and a PhD in Sports Psychology. He was a lecturer and academic coordinator at the University of Minho, a trainer in several sports federations and a consultant for high-performance athletes and coaches.

He was the first Supporters' Ombudsman for the Portuguese Professional Football League and is currently a member of the UEFA Expert Committee. He is the author of several publications and a regular media presence, and is widely recognised for his integrity and commitment to ethical values in sport.

Jorge Silvério is also an ambassador for Ethics in Sport, within the scope of the National Plan for Ethics in Sport.

The Ombudsman states that “Sport has been part of my life since I was very young, first as a practitioner and then as a psychologist. So, from an early age I sensed and understood the importance that sport could have in a society that is increasingly devoid of values and, paradoxically, desperately in need of them.”

Lídia Praça, member of the IPDJ Board of Directors, reveals that «the appointment of Jorge Silvério reinforces the IPDJ's commitment, through the National Plan for Ethics in Sport, to promoting an ethical, responsible and inclusive sporting culture».

The Sports Ethics Ombudsman “is essential to ensuring that sport is an activity that not only promotes physical health, but also the moral and social development of individuals and the community”.
