Inter issues official statement and confirms departure on the eve of the match against Flamengo

Midfielder Fernando, 38, officially ended his time at Internacional this Tuesday (August 12), after amicably terminating his contract. The decision was motivated by a posterior ligament injury in his right knee, suffered in the 2-0 loss to Fluminense, at Beira-Rio, in the first round of the Brasileirão. With a contract expected to run until December, the player gave up approximately R$5 million in salary that he would have received until the end of the season.
Revealed by Vila Nova's youth academy, Fernando built a distinguished career in Europe, playing for clubs such as Manchester City, before arriving at Beira-Rio in early 2024. At Colorado, he quickly gained space and identification with the fans, being a key player in the undefeated title of the 2025 Campeonato Gaúcho, which ended a state drought that had lasted since 2016.
Internacional stated in an official statement that the athlete has played 54 matches and scored three goals for the club, highlighting his example of commitment and professionalism. The statement also left open the possibility of a return, should Fernando decide to continue playing after his recovery.
"The doors of Beira-Rio remain open for Fernando, and if he chooses to return to the field in the future, Colorado will have priority in having him back in the squad. He carries with him the respect and affection of the players, staff, coaching staff, board of directors, and, above all, the Colorado fans," the club said.
President Alessandro Barcellos reiterated his gratitude for the midfielder's contribution. "Thank you to Fernando for all his dedication and professionalism. The doors of Beira-Rio will always be open," he declared, recalling the athlete's close relationship with leaders and board members, such as Andrés D'Alessandro and André Mazzuco.
The recovery will take place in Goiânia, Fernando's hometown, where he will remain close to his family. The player will still be considering whether to continue his career or opt for retirement. According to the club, if the player continues, Internacional will be the priority for signing.
The decision generated widespread backlash among fans, who took to social media to express their frustration and appreciation. "He could have easily continued to milk the club until the end of his contract (which wouldn't have been wrong, by the way), but he preferred to spare Inter's coffers. Respect and admiration for the excellent professional and person. It's a shame to end it so early," wrote a Colorado fan identified as Alves.
Others emphasized the player's importance in recent times. "It's unbelievable that Inter's best midfielder in recent years has ended like this. They're truly the unluckiest club in history," lamented one fan. A Colorado fan summed up the sentiment by saying, "My day is over."
Without Fernando, coach Roger Machado is still searching for a player in the squad who can play the same role in midfield, highlighting the midfielder's relevance both technically and within the group.
