Blackout in Spain suspends matches and halts play on match point at Madrid Masters

A widespread blackout in Spain, which also affected Portugal, caused the Madrid Masters 1000 matches to be suspended on Monday. With the suspension of matches, the schedule for this Monday is suspended . And the games scheduled for this Monday may be postponed until Tuesday. The organization has not yet commented on the status of the day's schedule.

At the moment, the following matches have been suspended in Madrid : Grigor Dimitrov vs. Jacob Fearnley, with a partial victory of 6/4 and 5/4 for the Bulgarian; Damir Dzumhur vs. Matteo Arnaldi, with the Italian ahead, with partials of 3/6 and 2/3; and the doubles clash, between the Americans Evan King and Christian Harrison and the Australians Matthew Abden and John Peers, with the United States team ahead on the scoreboard, with 5/3 in the first set.

The Madrid Masters organizers said on social media that they are working to resume play " as soon as possible ." Without power on the courts, the line marking system, which determines whether a point has been scored if the ball is close to the sides of the court, cannot work.

In addition to the Iberian Peninsula, regions of France, England, Italy, and other European countries were also affected. At the time of publication of this text, power had not been restored to the Madrid Complex, where the Masters 1000 matches are taking place.

The power outage occurred at around 12:30 p.m. Spanish time - 7:30 a.m. Brasília time - and there is still no official explanation. According to the Spanish newspaper El País, the failure affected the entire continental part of the Iberian Peninsula, causing problems in the areas of communication, public transportation, airports, shops, among others.

The governments of Portugal and Spain are studying, together with Red Eléctrica, the public company responsible for the supply of energy, whether the problem was caused by a cyberattack. The electricity company's plans to restore power have begun in the north and south of Spain. The capital Madrid, however, remains in the dark.
