BE presents Sérgio Aires as candidate for Porto

The Porto council of the Left Bloc (BE) announced this Tuesday that the independent Sérgio Aires will lead the party's candidacy for the Porto City Council in the local elections on October 12.
The council announced that Sérgio Aires' candidacy will be publicly presented on Thursday, at 6 pm, in Jardim de São Lázaro and “will mark the official start of the candidacy”, according to a statement.
“It is time to present strong reasons for a left-wing alternative for Porto”, argued the BE, “for a safe port and a freer, fairer and more fraternal city”.
The party also said that the candidacy comes “after four years of an interventionist mandate, which gave voice to so many causes”.
Sérgio Aires, a graduate in Sociology, is currently a councilor without a portfolio at the Porto City Council, after having been, between 2017 and 2019, a consultant to the Regional Government of the Azores for the creation of a strategy to combat poverty.
In addition to Sérgio Aires, Manuel Pizarro (PS), Diana Ferreira (CDU), Nuno Cardoso (Porto First movement), Aníbal Pinto (New Right), Pedro Duarte for the “Porto is Us” coalition (PSD/IL/CDS-PP), Guilherme Alexandre Jorge (Volt), the current vice-president Filipe Araújo (Do it Porto way), António Araújo (Porto way movement), Hélder Sousa (Livre) and Miguel Corte-Real (Chega) are running for the Porto City Council.
The current executive is made up of a majority of six elected members of Rui Moreira's movement and one independent councilor, with the remaining two elected members of the PS, two from the PSD, one from the CDU and one from the BE.
