Wojciech Szczęsny takes on a new role at Barcelona. An additional role for the Pole!

Why this conclusion? A few weeks ago, we reported that speculation was emerging in Spanish and Catalan media regarding Robert Lewandowski's expiring contract with Barcelona not being extended . Lewandowski could be leaving the Catalan club after a few years.
Wojciech Szczęsny has a new role at Barcelona. Will the Pole rise to the challenge? The future of RL9 will likely become clear in the next few months. Lewandowski is fighting for a new contract at Barcelona, and another Polish player, Wojciech Szczęsny, recently signed a contract with the club . The goalkeeper has signed a contract until the end of the 2026/27 season.
Interestingly, Szczęsny will fulfill a dual role within coach Hansi Flick's squad. On the one hand, he will serve as a direct backup for Joan Garcia, who was signed from Espanyol in the summer. On the other, Szczęsny will also provide support for his younger teammate in training and the continued development of this remarkable talent – a role that transcends the Spanish league.
Joan Garcia has the credentials to play at a truly high level and be a top-of-the-line player for Barca for years to come. The Spaniard is currently only 24 years old.
The division of goalkeeping duties in Barcelona was described in more detail by RAC1 radio journalist Alex Pintanel.
"The roles are clearly defined. Joan Garcia will be the starting goalkeeper, and Wojciech Szczęsny will be his backup, and he will only play in the Copa del Rey […] The Pole has experience from his extensive career and at Barca, which is his advantage. I wouldn't say he's his teacher, but he will help him," admitted the journalist in an interview with "Przegląd Sportowy" and Onet.
Szczęsny and Lewandowski formed a Polish duo in the Catalan club's ranks during the 2024/25 season. The goalkeeper arrived at Barcelona due to an injury suffered by the team's then-first-choice goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen. Ultimately, even after his recovery, the German failed to surpass Szczęsny in the pecking order. The Pole was Barca's number one between the posts for the decisive part of the previous campaign.
