The first match provided plenty of excitement. Zverev recovered from a set deficit and in the third set, at 6-5 with Khachanov serving, had match point. However, the Russian warded off the threat and triumphed in a tiebreak, securing a spot in the final in Canada.

The Americans' match also saw a surprise. Shelton dispatched Fritz without any major problems, triumphing in straight sets – 6-4, 6-3.

The Toronto tournament final between Khachanov and Shelton will take place on Thursday night. The Russian already holds an ATP Masters 1000 title (Paris 2018). For the American, this would be the most valuable scalp of his career to date.

Karen Khachanov - Alexander Zverev 6:3, 4:6, 7:6(4)

Ben Shelton - Taylor Fritz 6:4, 6:3
