At an altitude of 5,700 meters above sea level, the German woman was hit by a rockfall. She and her companion were climbing Laila Peak (6,096 m). The latter managed to summon help and was later brought to safety.

Despite an immediate call for help, difficult terrain delayed rescuers' arrival. A rescue helicopter did not arrive at the accident site until the following morning (Wednesday). An international rescue team was on site, supported by experienced mountaineers based in the region.

Laura Dahlmeier is dead! A huge tragedy for the world of sports.

The German biathlete was a three-time Olympic medalist, achieving these successes at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. At that time, Dahlmeier won two gold medals (sprint and pursuit) and bronze in the individual pursuit.

These are just a few of the many successes of this highly decorated athlete. The German is also a seven-time biathlon world champion, winning her titles between 2015 and 2017. In the 2016/17 season, she triumphed in the overall World Cup standings, earning the Crystal Globe.

The German ended her sports career in 2019. She became a licensed mountain and ski guide, and also a member of the mountain rescue service.

In a documentary for German television station ZDF, the former biathlete spoke about the death of her former partner, Robert Grasegger. The German woman suffered a devastating mountain-related tragedy when he died during an expedition in Patagonia in January 2022. Dahlmeier and Grasegger, who shared a passion for climbing, spent their summer vacation together in the summer of 2019.

Unfortunately, another tragedy has now occurred.
