Soccer is like volleyball! This rule change will be groundbreaking.

Soccer is like volleyball! This rule change will be groundbreaking.

Starting next season in Spain, a new refereeing system, the so-called "light VAR," will be in effect in the third division and possibly in women's competitions. Coaches will have the right to request a challenge, as is the case in volleyball, for example.

According to reports in the Spanish press in recent days, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has approved the introduction of the FVS (Football Video Support) system for the Primera Federacion, the third tier of the league in Spain.

This "light" version of VAR, as the Spanish media describe it, is a cheaper and more simplified system for supporting referees during matches. It features, among other things, fewer cameras and a lack of advanced technology. The FVS system makes matches more dynamic and fluid, but is less precise than VAR.

Under the new changes, coaches will have the right to request VAR intervention twice during a match; if the ruling is in his team's favour, he will retain the right to use the request.

According to Spanish media, similar regulations may also be approved in League F, the highest level of women's competition.

In La Liga, the top league in Spain, the current VAR (Video Assistant Referee) rules will continue to apply, with a semi-automatic offside system and no challenge possible.
