Returning to the tour for good this year, the 35-year-old Sevastova defeated Australian Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in her opening match.
The Latvian is ranked 386th in the world, but was 11th in 2018. She suspended her career in 2022 after the Australian Open, from which she was eliminated in the first round by... Linette.
In December of that year, she gave birth to a daughter. After a year's break, she returned to playing in smaller tournaments. Last season, she played in two events, but now – since May and the Madrid tournament – she's been trying her hand at the WTA circuit in earnest; among other things, she reached the quarterfinals in Rabat and was eliminated in the first round at Wimbledon.
The 33-year-old from Poznań has faced Sevastova, who comes from Liepāja, twice so far; apart from winning in Melbourne in 2022, she lost to the four-time WTA tournament winner in 2016 in New Haven.
Linette, like second-seeded Iga Świątek and Magdalena Fręch, will begin competing on Wednesday.
