It happened. This is the end of the most famous bogeyman in Poland.

The problem concerns the entire football community in the Warmia-Masuria province. The Ekstraklasa has not been here for over two decades, and there are more obstacles. Football in Warmia and Mazury has been a picture of misery and despair for years. " There is no club in Poland that has had a more dramatic decline ," a TVP Sport commentator from Olsztyn told Przegląd Sportowy Onet.

Stomil was promoted to the Ekstraklasa in 1994 and played there for eight seasons. Four years ago, the situation was not so tragic. The Olsztyn team was at the back of the elite, but in 2022 they were relegated to the 2nd league. Since this season, they have only played in the 3rd league, a level from which it is very difficult to return to the upper level. The sight of the facility in the capital of the province has also been depressing for years.

Olsztyn will see changes. Tender starts

This is about the OSiR Stadium, which was built in 1978 as a community effort within the Olsztyn Car Tire Plant (OZOS). Harvest festivals were held there, and after years the partially modernized project looked worse and worse.

There was a plan for changes earlier, but the city of Olsztyn was forced to cancel the tender for renovation. Only one company submitted a bid for the tender, and its bid for the construction of a new stand was over PLN 67 million, with PLN 30 million in subsidies. And that meant problems.

Now the situation is to change. "I promised you that I would not give up on the subject of the Municipal Stadium and, as promised, we have just announced another tender for the design and reconstruction of the eastern stand. This is another step that brings us closer to the modernization of the stadium in the city of Olsztyn," writes President Szewczyk on social media.

"After analysing previous bids, we have modified the scope of work to maximise the use of available funds. A covered stand for 4,500 fans will still be built, but we have decided against, among other things, demolishing the southern stand and building a car park in its place, which will allow the investment to better fit the budget," he explains, revealing details about the previous tender and the only bid.

"It significantly exceeded our capabilities. That is why we made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel it and find a new solution. Now we are giving ourselves a real chance to select a contractor and start work!" — assures the president of Olsztyn.

Companies have until March 27 to submit offers to the city office. According to the new plan, the eastern stand is to be dismantled, after which construction of a completely new one is to begin. Additionally, the city plans to modernize the parking lots and parts of the northern stand. The poles with lamps illuminating the pitch are also to continue to operate. Despite this, the project is criticized by many residents and fans.

"If you're going to make another dud on the cheap, don't even touch this one", "I'm afraid the south stand will remain a pile of rubble", "the idea of renovating the stadium is out of place" - these are just some of the comments under the post of the mayor of Olsztyn.
