Eurocup-3. Third place for Kacper Sztuka
The Poles did very well in today's qualifications, Maciej Gładysz took second place, and Sztuka was right behind him. Unfortunately, the Pole, after receiving a penalty earlier, was knocked back five positions at the start. After the start, Gładysz fell to third place, while Sztuka advanced to fifth place, which he lost quite quickly.
The first three drivers pulled away from the rest of the field by a few seconds. Colnaghi, Rinicella and Gładysz were in constant contact. Kacper Sztuka, on the other hand, watched the competition of two other drivers who were fighting for fourth place. This fight lasted quite a long time, until at some point the driver from Poland saw his chance.
The Pole showed off very good offensive skills and overtook two rivals on one corner. Sztuka went on the defensive and successfully defended his position. On the penultimate lap, the car driven by Maciej Gładysz broke down. The young Tarnów native stopped his car on the side of the road and withdrew from the competition. Sztuka benefited from Gładysz's bad luck and ultimately stood on the lowest step of the podium.
"The weekend in Portimao is over. We started it with two training sessions, where I got to know the track. The pace was strong, the whole of Campos performed well in the training sessions. Saturday's qualifying was held on a wet track, we in the team were counting on the track drying out and took a risk with the tyres. Unfortunately, this did not happen and the rain tyres clearly won. Despite the sun, the track dried very slowly, which was a big surprise for us. Some of the field, like us, used tyres for a dry track, some decided to use rain tyres. It was a kind of lottery.
In the first race, after the start there was some overtaking, then unfortunately there was contact with a rival and slight damage to the car. I lost a lot of positions, then I made up for the losses again and finally finished in eleventh place. Then we had a sprint. There, at the beginning of the second lap, I collided with a teammate and ended the competition. It was a short day. Today, qualifying ended in third position. Added a five-place penalty for Saturday's contact and starting from eighth position in the last, Sunday race. I had a good start, I made good use of the situation on the first lap, I moved up to fifth position. Then a fight with two other competitors, practically the entire race.
I was waiting for a good opportunity to come, there was quite a long fight ahead of me, and I took advantage of it at the right moment. In the eleventh turn I overtook both rivals, which was a nice maneuver and ultimately guaranteed me a place on the podium. I am glad that we ended this weekend on a positive note, I have been struggling with the flu since the beginning of the week, I spent most of the time in bed, so my preparation was not at the best level. I am all the more glad that we ended the weekend with a place on the podium and showed good pace. We are now focusing on using all this in the next races and fighting for the best possible place," commented Kacper Sztuka.
