Aryna Sabalenka withdraws from Canada. Świątek faces a big opportunity

Aryna Sabalenka withdraws from Canada. Świątek faces a big opportunity

Tennis players alternate between competing in Montreal and Toronto each year. Last year, Świątek missed Toronto because she was resting after the Paris Olympics. The 24-year-old from Raszyn has never won on Canadian courts. Her best result came in 2023, when she was eliminated in the semifinals. Now, she travels to Montreal basking in the glow of her Wimbledon triumph.

This year's edition has been extended, and 96 singles players will compete, just like in Indian Wells and Miami. The 32 seeds will have a bye in the first round. Polish women Magdalena Fręch and Magda Linette will also compete in Montreal, with the draw scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. Polish time.

In Sabalenka's absence, who is complaining of fatigue, American Coco Gauff will play against the number one seed. Świątek will be seeded second. The Belarusian has a huge lead in the rankings, and her absence in Canada won't hurt her. Gauff is ahead by 4,751 points, and Świątek by 5,607 points.

Świątek has also never won in Cincinnati, where the competition will take place from August 11. This will be the final test before the US Open – the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. The Polish player triumphed in New York three years ago. (PAP)
