Shields and logos. VfB Stuttgart

This Saturday we're going to talk about the beautiful crest of one of the great and classic teams of German football, Stuttgart , which has an interesting history from a heraldic perspective and which will also be familiar to you if you're into motorsports.
Indeed, the Verein für Bewegungsspiele Stuttgart 1893 e. V. (Stuttgart Movement Games Association) was founded in the year indicated by its name. In any case, the club had several names and several crests before arriving at its present form. For example, the club's first name, until 1912, was Stuttgarter FV 93, and the main element of the crest was a six-pointed star. It wasn't until 1912 that the most recognizable elements of the current crest appeared: three black deer antlers on a gold background. Where does such a peculiar object come from?
Well, you should know that Stuttgart is in the state of Baden-Württenberg, and that the three deer antlers are the emblem of the Duchy (or County) of Württenberg , whose seat was located in the castle of the same name, on top of a hill near the city of Stuttgart.
The Württembergs adopted this emblem based on the coat of arms of their cousins, the Counts of Nellenburg (three blue antlers on a gold field), which in turn was based on the coat of arms of their cousins, the Counts of Veringen (three red antlers on a gold field).
These three deer antlers will indeed be familiar to you because they are also present, and in duplicate, in the emblem of the luxury car company Porsche , which is based in Stuttgart and whose presence in the logo is obvious.
The VfB Stuttgart crest is crowned by the letters "VfB" in elaborate German Gothic font, beneath which the club's founding year can be seen. Between 1994 and 2014, the name of the city could be seen beneath the letters, but 11 years ago , it was replaced by the date.
I hope you enjoyed the article. See you tomorrow.

My name is Eduardo Casado, and I'm a journalist. One day I decided to blog about the stories of those athletes who enjoyed glory and success and then, overnight, disappeared. Knowing what happened to them holds many surprises. We'll also learn about other, less famous figures whose stories are worth telling... and more. This blog is open to all of you, so you can contribute information about the whereabouts of its protagonists, share anecdotes, or suggest names.
