Mexicans Ana Sánchez and Victoria Rodríguez advance to the next round of doubles at the Mérida Open 2025

In a heart-stopping and highly exciting duel, Mexicans Ana Sofía Sánchez and Victoria Rodríguez achieved a historic victory in the first round of doubles at the Mérida Open AKRON 2025 against the duo formed by the Ukrainian Valeriya Strakhova and the New Zealander Lulu Sun.

The victory achieved on Monday evening was much more significant for Ana and Victoria because, in addition to having to come back and know how to suffer to stay alive, this victory was the first of their careers in the WTA 500 category .

The Aztec couple had to row against the current and take advantage of their rivals' mistakes. Although the match had to be temporarily suspended due to a rainstorm that fell on the Yucatán Country Club and they started the first inning losing 4-6, this did not stop the attack or the desire of Sánchez and Rodríguez to impose their conditions .

In the second set, Strakhova and Sun again took the lead , and even managed to get a two-game advantage that made things difficult for the Mexicans. However, Ana and Victoria were encouraged by the Mexican crowd to tie the set 4-4 and, in the end, beat them 7-5.

With the crowd in their favor and the pressure off their opponents, Sánchez and Rodríguez were the first to reach 10 points in the third set , leaving Lulu and Valeriya behind in dramatic but forceful fashion in the final stretch of the match.

Ana and Victoria never gave up on him

The Mexican couple confessed that, although they saw themselves behind in the score at the beginning of the match, they always knew that they could take the victory and they also recognize that it is one of the most important victories in their careers .

“I felt throughout the match that we could be the ones on top and that we could win because the difference in the score was small points, maybe some important ones that would have put them on top. It is our first victory in a tournament of this level, so it is something very good. Obviously the support from everyone helped us a lot,” said Victoria.
