Liam Lawson nearly runs over two marshals during the Mexico GP

New Zealand RB driver Liam Lawson experienced a tense moment in the opening laps of the 2025 Mexican Grand Prix after encountering two marshals on the track between Turns 2 and 3 in a situation that could have ended in tragedy .
In the images captured by the camera on board his car, it can be seen how Lawson managed to avoid the officials , who were carrying out cleaning tasks after the chaos of the start, when the contacts between Lando Norris, Hamilton, Leclerc and Red Bull's Max Verstappen occurred.
Following the incident, Lawson expressed his annoyance at the situation :
"Obviously, we can't understand how it's possible that on an active track, the marshals are allowed to run across the track like that. So, yes, I have no idea why it happened, but I'm sure we'll get some explanation," the driver said.
In this regard, the FIA stated that "following an incident at Turn 1, Race Control was informed of the presence of debris on the track at the apex of that corner. On lap 3, the marshals were alerted and put on standby to enter the track and retrieve the debris once all cars had passed Turn 1."
He added that as soon as "it became clear that Lawson had entered the pit lane, the instructions to send marshals were reversed, and a double yellow flag was displayed in that area. We are continuing to investigate what happened next ."
The New Zealander, who had to retire from the race on the first lap after a collision with Carlos Sainz's Williams, described the incident as something that "cannot happen again."
Regarding the incident that forced him to retire from the race, the controversial driver claimed that it was a racing incident:
“There’s not much I can say. I don’t think he did it intentionally. I’m sure he didn’t try to crash into me on purpose, but it’s one of those things that happens. I fully understand that the first corner on the first lap is chaotic, but we all try to be aware of what’s going on around us. You can’t just decide to cut the chicane without looking to your left, because he hit me so hard that he smashed the whole side of the floor. I broke the front wing and that ruined our race.”
