Kevin Durant and a historic NBA trade never seen before: what the engineering is like involving 13 players and 7 teams.

Kevin Durant and a historic NBA trade never seen before: what the engineering is like involving 13 players and 7 teams.

Kevin Durant will trade the Phoenix Suns for the Houston Rockets in an extremely complex transaction involving seven franchises, the first time this has happened in NBA history. The move was known since June 22, just hours before Game 7 of the Finals, in which the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers 4-3. But all the details of the transaction were yet to be revealed, as it was known that multiple teams would be needed to balance the accounts.

It has now been made official that seven franchises are part of this huge NBA megastar trade, as the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Minnesota Timberwolves are also participating. The previous record was a six-team transaction last summer that sent Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks.

Durant, 36, was the NBA's leading scorer four times and a two-time Finals MVP . Last season, his 17th in the league, he averaged 26.6 points. For his career, the forward averaged 27.2 points and 7 rebounds per game.

Houston is his fifth franchise, following the SuperSonics (then Oklahoma City Thunder), Golden State, Brooklyn, and Phoenix. Durant won his two titles with the Warriors in 2017 and 2018, and at Paris 2024 he became the player with the most points in U.S. Olympic basketball history (518 points) and the first man to be part of four gold medal teams.

“Kevin impacts the game on both ends of the court and is one of the most efficient scorers in history,” Houston general manager Rafael Stone said. “We liked the growth our team showed last season and believe Kevin's skill set will fit in seamlessly.”

Ime Udoka, who will be his coach, stated: “Having played against Kevin and coached him before, I know he’s the type of competitor who fits with what we’ve been building. His skill level, his love for the game, and his dedication to his craft have made him one of the most respected players of his generation.”

Meanwhile, Phoenix general manager Brian Gregory praised Durant's work for the franchise: "He's one of the greatest to ever play the game. We're grateful for the impact Kevin had on our organization and our community. He climbed the scoring charts to become the eighth player in NBA history to score 30,000 points, and we wish him the best as he continues his career in Houston."

Thirteen players were involved in this massive trade, six of whom were already in the league, and a wealth of draft picks were traded, some of them from the 2025 draft, with names already known.

The Rockets take Durant and Clint Capela, while the Suns receive Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Khaman Maluach (10th pick in the last draft), Rasheer Fleming (31st), Koby Brea, Daeqwon Plowden and two second-round picks from the 2026 and 2032 drafts.

The Warriors took Alex Toohey and Jahmai Mashack at the 52nd and 59th picks in the last draft, and the Lakers got Adou Thiero (36th) and cash. The Nets got two second-round picks in the 2026 and 2030 drafts, the Hawks got David Roddy plus a second-round pick in the 2031 draft and cash, and the Wolves got Rocco Zikarsky (45th), two second-round picks in the 2026 and 2032 drafts, and cash.

What makes this mega-trade so curious and historic is that since some of the draft picks won't be made until 2032, those players haven't even made it to high school yet.
