Sign Celebrating Armagh GAA Club's Historic Win Torched During 'Disgraceful' Incident

Sign Celebrating Armagh GAA Club's Historic Win Torched During 'Disgraceful' Incident

Armagh GAA club Madden had a historic victory over the weekend, claiming their first ever senior county title with a victory over Cullyhanna on Sunday afternoon.

The club, who had never previously reached a senior Armagh final, produced an excellent display to run out as convincing 0-20 to 0-9 winners on the day.

There were some magnificent scenes in the aftermath of the fixture, including joint celebrations with Tyrone champions Loughmacrory earlier this week.

However, there has been somewhat of a dampner put on the Madden celebrations after a sign congratulating the club was subject to an apparent arson attack.

Torching Of Sign Celebrating Armagh GAA Club's Historic Triumph Widely Condemned

A sign congratulating Madden on their Armagh county title triumph was subject to an arson attack on Tuesday night.

The Irish News are reporting that the sign had been placed at Farnaloy Road in Madden. Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan would share an image of the burnt out sign on social media, condemning the actions of those who carried out the attack.

I condemn in the strongest terms the disgraceful burning of the congratulations sign for the Madden Senior footballers.

We have reported this criminality to the police and will fully support their investigation.

At a time when our community is filled with pride and joy, this act is deeply disappointing and does not reflect the true spirit of Madden — one of unity, respect, and pride in our team.

Now is the time to stand together, support one another, and continue celebrating the success of our players, coaches, and everyone involved in this remarkable season.

Sinn Féin will continue working with all relevant bodies and the wider community to ensure those responsible are held accountable and that our shared sense of pride and togetherness endures.

The PSNI have since confirmed that the incident was reported on Wednesday morning, with anyone with information regarding the burning of the sign asked to contact the authorities.

This is certainly a sad aspect to the historic of achievements of Madden in recent days, although it is unlikely to dampen the feeling of celebration with the Armagh community.
