Two-time Olympic cycling champion Remco Evenepoel is switching teams to join the ambitious Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe

Remco Evenepoel will leave Soudal Quick-Step at the end of the season. Three weeks after the Belgian leader's withdrawal from the Tour de France, his team announced in a statement released Tuesday, August 5, that "Remco representatives have informed team management that he does not wish to discuss an extension of his current agreement, which expires at the end of 2026." Julian Alaphilippe's former team has chosen, after consulting with its title sponsors, "that it was in everyone's best interest" to release the 2022 world champion "at the end of the current season."
The two-time Olympic champion will join Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe, where he had been expected for several weeks. "Remco embodies ambition. He doesn't just want to ride, he wants to shape cycling ," said Ralph Denk, manager of the German team. "He not only possesses exceptional sporting talent, but also a remarkable mindset. His determination, professionalism, and unwavering will to succeed are a true source of inspiration."
Winner of the Tour of Spain in 2022 and 3rd in the Tour de France in 2024, Remco Evenepoel has won numerous titles with the "Wolfpack", which he joined in 2019. " Although we regret Remco's departure, we will cherish the memories we have created and continue to work together to achieve significant results for the rest of the season," Soudal Quick-Step stressed.
The Belgian, world champion on the road in 2022 and in the time trial in 2023 and 2024, has also distinguished himself in the classics – renowned one-day cycling races. He notably won Liège-Bastogne-Liège twice, in 2022 and 2023. Remco Evenepoel, who became Belgian time trial champion again at the end of June, had a thwarted start to the season due to a serious accident in December 2024. But the 25-year-old rider still won the 5th stage of the 2025 Tour de France, a time trial around Caen, before showing his limits in the Pyrenees stages.
Joining Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe marks a real turning point for the German team. Having long been discreet despite a patient rise to power, it is now establishing itself as a stronghold in the peloton. With Florian Lipowitz, 3rd and best young rider in the recent Tour de France, and Primoz Roglic, four-time winner of the Vuelta a España (2019, 2020, 2021 and 2024) and the Giro d'Italia (2023), the team combines youth, ambition and strategic weight.
"The arrival of Remco Evenepoel marks more than just a milestone for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe: it sends a powerful signal ," she said in a statement. "With renewed confidence and bold ambition, the team is preparing to become one of the most attractive teams in international cycling in the years to come." In this new setting, Remco Evenepoel arrives as the centerpiece of a building under construction, ready to enter the duel at the top between UAE Team Emirates and Visma-Lease a Bike.
