The praise was in order at the end of an enchanting Women's Euro for Switzerland and its national team. Pia Sundhage's players had communed with their supporters throughout a tournament that saw them reach the quarter-finals (elimination against Spain) in packed stadiums.

Would the "Euro 2025 effect" have a lasting impact on women's football in Switzerland? The first matchday of the Women's Super League, scheduled for Saturday, provides a first element of the answer: yes.

Five matches were scheduled. One of which (Basel - Aarau) should be set aside: the FCB women's team was allowed to start the competition at St. Jakob Park - which is not usually the case - for a special match broadcast live on national television.

Although only the main stand was open, 5,348 fans gathered at the Joggeli stadium , which had hosted the Euro final between England and Spain. This is a new record for the FC Basel women's team.

While the attendance at Basel-Aarau may obviously skew the statistics, the four other clubs playing at home on Saturday's opening day all had attendances higher than their average for last season.

Nearly 700 spectators attended St. Gallen (an 88% increase compared to the 2024/25 season), 300 in Thun (+150%) and 400 in Lucerne for the visit of Servette-Chênois (+33%). In total, this first day was followed by a total of 7,039 spectators, an average of just over 1,400 spectators per match.

Last season, 84,420 people were counted around Women's Super League stadiums, according to figures from the Swiss Football Association (ASF). This represents an average of 773 spectators per match, compared to only 657 during the previous championship.

We are therefore off to a much higher start in this first "post-Euro" competition. This is something that only needs to be confirmed on the second day, on Saturday, September 6.
