Already decisive last weekend against Osasuna (1-0), French striker Kylian Mbappé, who scored twice, led Real Madrid to a second victory in two La Liga matches on Sunday, August 24, away to newly promoted Oviedo (3-0). The French team captain , European Golden Shoe winner and top scorer in the Spanish league last season, was clinical to lead Real to victory thanks to a superb pivot sequence (37th, 1-0) then a perfect finish with his right foot from a Vinicius Junior pass (83rd, 2-0).
The Brazilian, who came on in the second half, sealed the victory at the end of added time (90th + 3, 3-0). Now flanked by the number 10 of the Whites, Kylian Mbappé has confirmed his status as the leader of the attack at the start of the season, and even narrowly missed out on a hat-trick (85th). Back in form after finally being able to recharge his batteries this summer, Mbappé, once again voted man of the match, earned praise from his coach Xabi Alonso.
"What has changed since the Club World Cup? Well, he's put back on the four kilos he lost. (...) He feels good and it shows. He's motivated and connected to the team, he has influence in the game. I really liked seeing him swap positions and be involved in defense in that way," said Xabi Alonso at a press conference.
For their return to the top flight, 24 years later, the small Asturian club can nevertheless boast of having held their own against Mbappé and the Spanish giants for a large part of the match. The teammates of Santi Cazorla, the former Arsenal playmaker, who came on late, could have even equalized just before Mbappé's brace, but Ghanaian midfielder Kwasi Sibo hit the post of Thibaut Courtois (82nd).
