Liverpool striker Diogo Jota dies aged 28 in car crash with his brother in Spain

The news came out of nowhere this Thursday morning, July 3, announced on social media by the Spanish sports daily Marca . Diogo Jota, the Liverpool and Portuguese national team striker, died in a road accident during the night.
The 28-year-old was in a vehicle with his brother, Andre, 25, a professional footballer who also died. Andre played in the Portuguese second division in Penafiel, near Porto.

The two men reportedly lost control of the car on a Spanish road in the far north of Portugal, in the province of Zamora. Father of three, Diogo Jota, had married less than two weeks earlier.
The striker has been playing for Liverpool since 2020, after several years spent in Portugal (Paços de Ferreira and FC Porto) and three seasons at Wolverhampton in England. With the Reds, he won the Premier League in 2025 and played in the 2022 Champions League final in Paris , losing to Real Madrid. He also has two Nations League titles to his name, including one he won less than a month ago with Portugal.
According to Portuguese media, Diogo Jota was on his way back to England. Liverpool's players are due to return to training early next week before playing their first friendly match on Sunday, July 13th against Preston, who play in the English second division.
