This is how Valverde missed the penalty: it cost Madrid the victory and almost a million euros.

Real Madrid drew 1-1 in their Club World Cup opener against Al Hilal, a match in which Fede Valverde missed a penalty in the 91st minute that Bono saved, and which would have meant victory for the Whites, as well as a significant injection of cash.

The referee awarded a penalty on Fran García in stoppage time with the score tied. This came after a VAR review and resulted in an elbow to the left back's face. Valverde went to shoot from the penalty spot, but Bono saved the Uruguayan's shot.

A goal that would have given Xabi Alonso's team victory and requires them to make sure they don't miss in their upcoming matches against Pachuca and Salzburg. Furthermore, the midfielder's error means Madrid loses money, as the World Cup awards prizes to teams in each phase.

The Club World Cup represents a significant cash injection for each club, with €929 million distributed among the 32 participating teams.

Of that amount, €500 million is distributed as a fixed sum, of which €284 million goes to European teams. €10 million is fixed, and the rest is variable. Just for participating, Real Madrid receives €35 million, and Atlético Madrid, €20 million.

Furthermore, since the tournament is held in phases, each phase has a prize pool. If a team advances to the round of 16, it receives €7 million; if it reaches the final, €28 million; and if it wins, €37 million. Therefore, every victory counts and brings it closer to the next phase. Madrid, having drawn against Al Hilal, has lost out on a prize of more than €800,000, or almost €1 million.
