Montes scores twice: Mexico advances to the 2025 Gold Cup after beating Suriname

The Mexican national team secured its place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Gold Cup by defeating Suriname 2-0 in a match that left more questions than answers about its performance. The match was played as part of the second round of Group A, and with this result, Mexico remains at the top of its group.

During the first 45 minutes, Javier Aguirre 's team took the initiative and maintained possession, but failed to translate that dominance into real danger. Surinam , meanwhile, grew in confidence over time and generated a couple of approaches to the opponent's area, although their finishing was lacking.

The second half brought more action. Both teams went on the attack, and it was Mexico who capitalized on their opportunities. In the 57th minute, Alexis Vega launched an offensive move from deep that culminated in César Montes 's header to open the scoring.

Five minutes later, Montes reappeared in the opposing penalty area, this time firing a shot straight into the net to make it 2-0 in the 62nd minute. With this result, Mexico secured its qualification to the next round and will be able to face the final group stage match against Costa Rica with greater confidence.

The group stage will be key to deciding the quarterfinal tie. Mexico leads Group A with six points and a better goal difference than the Costa Ricans, who have also won their previous two matches. Suriname remains in third place with no points, and the Dominican Republic is at the bottom, also with zero points, but with a more unfavorable goal difference.

Mexico 's next match will be on Sunday, June 22, against Costa Rica , a team coached by Miguel Herrera . The match will be played as part of Matchday 3 of Group A and will determine the pairings for the next phase. Avoiding the first-place team in Group B, led by Canada , is one of the Mexican squad's objectives.

The match will be broadcast in Mexico on open television via Channel 5, as well as on the TUDN pay channel and the VIX Premium streaming platform.
