This isn't just another scandal involving the unruly personality of Julio César Chávez Jr., the fighter who carries his father's sporting prestige as both a gift and a crushing burden. The heir to Mexico's greatest boxing idol faces serious legal problems: he is about to be deported from the United States for lying on his residency application and has been linked to the Sinaloa cartel. He has been under investigation in Mexico since 2019, and in 2023, an arrest warrant was issued for him for organized crime and arms trafficking. This time, his problems have brought him to the brink of collapse.

On Friday, Julio César Chávez Sr. was announced as the guest of honor at a boxing event in his hometown of Culiacán. The popular idol did not attend. Instead, he was seen yesterday in Mexico City, where he spoke hurriedly while trying to avoid the press so as not to say anything that would jeopardize his son's case.

Of course I'm devastated , Chávez said as he tried to escape the media; let's let the authorities act; I trust them , he added.

Unable to escape, he paused briefly to make it clear that he considered the situation facing his firstborn to be unjust and that he hoped it would be resolved soon.

My son has had his missteps; when he was feeling ill, he said a lot of things because he was sick, but as for him being involved in those things (organized crime), I'd put my hand in the fire for him , the popular idol said, recalling the years his son spent trapped in addiction.

At that time, Chávez Jr. would often make extremely strange videos in which he was capable of making astonishing statements. During a video broadcast, he admitted that he knew Ovidio Guzmán, El Chapo 's son, who pleaded guilty to drug trafficking before US authorities a few days ago. On that occasion, he said he considered him a good person. It is a public fact that Julito is married to the widow of Édgar Guzmán, the Sinaloa drug lord's eldest son.

Open secret

Chávez Sr. has never denied that during his glory years, he was associated with Mexico's most powerful drug traffickers. A popular idol of his stature was a magnet for all kinds of people, including the unsavory figures with whom he once hung out, as he has admitted in various forums.

This Saturday in Mexico City, while trying to avoid talking about her son's case, she remembered him.

In Culiacán, everyone knows us. We're friends with everyone. That's a given, it's no secret. We know the good guys and the bad guys. We've hung out with everyone , he said off the cuff on the sidewalk.

My son also knows everyone; no one is denied a photo or an autograph, but as for him being involved in something illegal, there's none of that bullshit they're saying (about links to the Sinaloa cartel). Everything will be resolved, I'm sure , he added.

In a 2021 interview with a famous Mexican host, the idol recounted that he knew all the Mexican drug traffickers from his time as a boxing star. One bizarre episode from those years stands out for its participants. Chávez recounted that after defeating Héctor Macho Camacho in September 1992, there was a meeting organized by the bosses of the main Mexican cartels.

“There were the Arellano Félix brothers, Güero Palma, Amado Carrillo, Señor de los Cielos , Chapo Guzmán, Azul Esparragoza, Mayo Zambada, they were all there because I was their idol and they wanted to meet me,” Chávez said. “They were very good people, they always respected me .”

In that story with the host, he excused himself. He said he couldn't refuse those guys' invitations. He only received a message that someone wanted to see him, and they sent trucks with armed men to take him to their bosses. "Better to make friends than enemies. That's why I'm alive ," he deduced in that interview, in which he also claimed that they knew this in the United States because he had reported it.

Chávez insisted yesterday on the innocence of his son, with whom he has not yet spoken. He has only communicated with his lawyer , the idol emphasized; it's all a confusion and it will be resolved .

Without Arturo Guerrero and Manuel Raga, the history of Mexican basketball would be incomprehensible. The triumphs achieved just over half a century ago by former national team players gave the sport its splendour in our country in the 1960s and 1970s, and were remembered yesterday during a recognition ceremony at the Mexican Sports Confederation (Codeme).

It was always an honor to represent my country; today I walked past the Sports Palace and my skin crawled remembering what Manuel and I experienced at the 1968 Olympic Games. One of the most emotional moments of my career was when I promised my mother that before she passed away I would win the award for best athlete in Mexico, and I did so in 1970 , Guerrero shared.

Next year, the national team will mark half a century without qualifying for the Olympics, and Mano Santa hopes the drought can soon end.

Hopefully, a group of talented players will soon be formed and a ticket will be secured , added Guerrero, who was part of Mexico's national team and participated in two Olympic Games (Mexico 1968 and Montreal 1976).

Raga, a three-time European champion, shared his vision of the reality of Mexican basketball.

Unfortunately, we haven't built a good team. And it's not for lack of talent, but because the level of the sport has grown significantly worldwide. The day we reach half the level of work they're doing in Europe, the music will change , shared Raga, the Mexican Volador and the first NBA draft pick from the country by Atlanta (although he ultimately decided to play in Italy).

Raga, who joined the national team in 1962 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Mies, Switzerland, as a member of the 2016 class, urged officials to support the new generation from childhood.

"Money and support are needed at all levels. Unfortunately, the professional league in Mexico tends to focus on spectacle, and it's difficult for great talent to emerge from there. In nearly 50 years in football, Mexican national team coach Javier Aguirre's career includes episodes marked by relegation, club finals, and international tournaments, as well as unusual situations, such as the kick he gave to a Panama player at the 2009 Gold Cup and the press conference in which he wore a white cap, kept his head down, and accepted Argentina's superiority in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. "I can't argue with anyone anymore; I'm so tired ," he joked hours before facing the United States for the CONCACAF title.
