An Oviedo fan was arrested for making racist gestures during the match against Real Madrid.

The National Police have arrested a Real Oviedo fan for making racist gestures and noises from the home fans' stands at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium during the match between the Asturian club and Real Madrid on August 24, the Asturian Police Headquarters reported on Wednesday.

The supporter, arrested for a crime against moral integrity and a hate crime after being identified thanks to the analysis of images and videos, made movements and sounds imitating a monkey in the 37th minute, coinciding with the celebration of the first goal by the visiting team, which was scored by Kylian Mbappé .

These incidents were reported after the match by the Professional Football League (LFP), which warned that the images had reached a wider audience due to their dissemination on television and social media. After giving a statement at the police station, the man was brought before the Oviedo Court of First Instance on Duty.

In addition, he was proposed for administrative sanction for violating the Law Against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance in Sport, which provides for fines of 60,000 to 650,000 euros for very serious offenses, as well as a ban on access to the playing fields.

The investigation was also reported to the Deputy Prosecutor's Office for Criminal Protection, Equality and Against Discrimination, which handles hate crimes that, according to the Criminal Code, could carry a sentence of up to three years in prison, the Asturian Superior Police Headquarters added.
