The captain of the Turkish national team, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, could also have played for Germany. In 2014, Hansi Flick said of the Mannheim native: "In recent years, with the exception of Hakan Çalhanoğlu, who has outstanding qualities but chose Turkey, there hasn't been anyone we've missed." Çalhanoğlu currently has 97 caps.
