Liverpool's struggles continue. They suffered a resounding 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the League Cup, and to make matters worse, Liverpool weakened themselves with a red card.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot made sweeping changes to his starting lineup after the 2-3 defeat against Brentford FC : Woodman, Ramsay, Endo, Gomez, Robertson, Morrison, Nyoni, Mac Allister, Ngumoha, and Chiesa all came into the starting eleven. Only Kerkez remained from the starting lineup that had lost the Premier League match. Florian Wirtz was not even in the squad.

Oliver Glasner made four changes to the starting lineup after the 0-1 defeat at Arsenal : Benitez, Canvot, Sosa and Hughes were allowed to start.

The reigning English champions have lost their last five domestic matches. Any hopes of ending that run in the League Cup round of 16 were dashed by Saar in the first half. The striker shocked the Reds with a brace just before the break. In the 41st minute, Gomez made an unfortunate error, clearing a long ball from the visitors directly to Saar's feet. Saar gratefully accepted the gift and volleyed home to give his team the lead. Four minutes later, the striker once again unlocked Liverpool's defense, completing his brace after a brilliant combination with Yeremy.

Red card and another gift

Liverpool's miserable evening continued into the second half. Instead of the desperately needed equalizer, the hosts shot themselves in the foot. In the 79th minute, Nallo lost possession and could only stop the onrushing Devenny with a last-ditch tackle. Things went from bad to worse for Slot's side in the 88th minute, as they handed out more gifts. Gomez made his second costly error of the night, leading to a goal. The Englishman played a risky pass into midfield, which Lerma intercepted, setting up Yeremy. He then sealed the victory for Liverpool, putting the finishing touch on a truly awful night for the home side (88').

This coming Saturday evening, the Reds have the chance to at least avoid their seventh consecutive defeat (domestically). Aston Villa will be visiting Anfield. On the same day, Crystal Palace will face Brentford.
