With the UEFA Super Cup, a major international football event is returning to Austria. The Champions League versus Europa League winners clash will take place in Salzburg for the first time on August 12, 2026. The UEFA Executive Committee approved the tournament at its meeting on Thursday.

This will be the first UEFA final to be held in Austria since the EURO 2008 final. The venue will be the Wals-Siezenheim Arena, which has a total capacity of 30,071 spectators at international level.

ÖFB boss Pröll ambitious: "This should only be the beginning"

Austrian Football Federation (ÖFB) Chairman Josef Pröll expressed his delight at the European governing body's decision: "It is a great honor and joy that the 2026 UEFA Super Cup will take place in Salzburg," said the top official in Austrian football. They "aim to act as perfect hosts and provide the international guests with an unforgettable football festival."

Shortly after his election, Pröll emphasized his desire to bring Austria back into the international spotlight, including as a host country for top events. "During my visit to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin a few weeks ago, I clearly emphasized the Austrian Football Association's interest and willingness to assume responsibility in this area. The UEFA Super Cup is a perfect launch for this initiative, and it should be just the beginning," said Pröll.

Salzburg CEO Reiter: "A significant highlight for the entire region"

Stephan Reiter, CEO of Red Bull Salzburg, is also delighted with this decision: "We have had trusting and positive discussions with the UEFA officials and the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) for several weeks now, which ultimately led to this very positive decision."

The 54-year-old added: "A key reason for this was certainly that our club has been participating in UEFA competitions for many years, and our team organized these matches with great professionalism, something that also went unnoticed by the UEFA leadership. Such a major event in top-level European sport is a significant highlight not only for us as a club, but also for our beautiful city and the entire region."
