Freiburg hosts Stuttgart - Facts and figures about the southwest duel

Freiburg hosts Stuttgart - Facts and figures about the southwest duel

SC Freiburg and VfB Stuttgart have met 46 times in the Bundesliga so far. Ahead of their next clash in the southwestern region on Saturday, the Stuttgart side is under particular pressure.

After two matchdays in the new Bundesliga season, SC Freiburg has yet to earn a point. Following their opening defeat against FC Augsburg, Freiburg was followed by a heavy defeat at newly promoted 1. FC Köln . This means the club has now failed to pick up a point after two Bundesliga matchdays for the fourth time overall and for the first time since 2018/2019. Three defeats in the first three rounds of a Bundesliga season have only occurred once before: in 1995/1996 under Volker Finke. Back then, too, they started the season as European contenders after a splendid previous season and bungled the start.

A sigh of relief at VfB Stuttgart

Unlike SC Freiburg, VfB Stuttgart avoided a completely bad start to the season with their hard-fought victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach . After defeats in the Supercup and the Bundesliga opener, as well as the narrow penalty shootout victory in the DFB Cup in Braunschweig, it was their first victory after 90 minutes.

On Saturday (3:30 p.m., live at SWR1 Stadium), Freiburg and Stuttgart will face off in a Baden-Württemberg clash. The record from the 46 Bundesliga meetings between the two teams so far: Stuttgart has won 24 times, Freiburg 17 – and there have been five draws.

Freiburg's home strength against Stuttgart

However, the Swabians from Stuttgart have repeatedly struggled in Freiburg, losing four of their last five away games. In fact, SC Freiburg has only celebrated more home wins in the top flight against Mönchengladbach (13) than against Stuttgart (12).

Last season, the two teams met on Matchday 1 in Freiburg. Freiburg won the clash with the then runners-up 3-1. Ermedin Demirovic gave VfB the lead with his first touch of the ball in the second minute with a scissor-kick, but Lukas Kübler's brace (27th/61st) and Ritsu Doan (54th), who has since moved to Frankfurt, turned the game around in Freiburg's favor.

In the second half of the season, the Swabians took revenge against the South Baden team. Anthony Rouault (2'), Demirovic (17'), Nick Woltemade (45'+5'), and Deniz Undav (80') fired VfB to a comfortable 4-0 victory.

Matthias Ginter before anniversary for SC Freiburg

Freiburg native Matthias Ginter played for SC Freiburg as a child, making his first professional appearances for the club in 2012. In 2014, he moved to Dortmund and Mönchengladbach for eight years and returned to his hometown club in 2022. A milestone is now approaching for the club: If Ginter plays against VfB Stuttgart, it will be his 200th competitive match in the SC Freiburg jersey.

El Khannouss and Bouanani set to make their debut for VfB Stuttgart?

Two new signings for Stuttgart could make their Bundesliga debuts. Both El Bilal El Khannouss and Badredine Bouanani are options for attack, especially since Deniz Undav will be out for some time due to a knee injury.

VfB is aiming for its second win of the season in Freiburg, while Sport-Club is desperate to secure its first points of the new season. As so often in recent years, the upcoming regional clash between Freiburg and Stuttgart is brimming with excitement and thrilling stories.
