Despite historic European Championship successes: For Montse Tomé, tonight is all about everything

The Spanish women's team, still undefeated at the European Football Championship, enters the final in Basel as favorites. Coach Montse Tomé will have to deliver against England, and her future is uncertain. She reportedly feels no pressure, citing her successes.

For Spain's Montse Tomé, her future as national coach is also at stake in the European Championship final against England. The 43-year-old's contract with the Spanish Football Federation expires on August 31. Although Tomé was not explicitly asked about her personal situation at the final press conference before the match on Sunday (6 p.m./ZDF and DAZN) in Basel, she did speak about the world champions' role as favorites.

"The truth is, I'm not thinking about pressure. We've already made history here. We beat Germany for the first time, reached the semifinals and the final for the first time," said Tomé, pointing out that England are the defending champions. Her team should also enjoy the final.

No major title yet for Spain's coach

The 43-year-old experienced the 2023 World Cup triumph in Australia as assistant to the controversial and subsequently dismissed Jorge Vilda. She then became head coach, but missed out on a medal at the Olympic Games in France when the Spanish women's team lost to Germany in the bronze medal match. Although Tomé has already won the Nations League, a victory in the European Championship final would be a strong recommendation.

A repeat of the 2023 World Cup final will take place in Basel's St. Jakob-Park. Back then, the Spanish women, who have never won the European Championship, beat England 1-0.

Captain Paredes wants to "have fun"

"We're getting more experience each time to overcome such challenges," said Tomé. "I expect a balanced game." Captain Irene Paredes says she doesn't feel the pressure, "but rather sees it as an opportunity to play well and have fun. We know the English are among the favorites here."

The 34-year-old sees great support for her team in Spain: "We are aware that we have made a difference. We are also being heavily featured in the press. We also see the love that is shown to us."
