Gordon Herbert led Germany to the World Cup title and now coaches FC Bayern Munich. But a new chapter awaits the basketball coach in the summer of 2026. Herbert's next step is quite challenging.

After Germany's World Cup triumph, Gordon Herbert is returning to coaching a national basketball team. According to the Canadian Basketball Association, the 66-year-old will assume responsibility for his home country's national team in the summer of 2026. Herbert's contract with Bayern Munich expires then, and the German champions have not yet commented.

"I feel incredibly honored and excited about the opportunity to coach my home country," Herbert was quoted as saying in the association's statement. "Canada Basketball has made tremendous progress in recent years, and the depth of talent in the program is higher than anywhere else."

Bayern loses managing director and coach

Herbert is expected to lead Canada to further heights at the 2027 World Cup in Qatar and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The team, led by NBA superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, won the bronze medal at Germany's 2023 World Cup triumph in the Philippines and is considered highly talented.

Herbert served as Canada's assistant coach from 2001 to 2002. He returned to the sidelines in 2018, guiding the team through several qualifying phases for the World Championships and the 2021 Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Herbert coached the German Basketball Federation (DBB) team from 2021 to 2024. A bronze medal at the 2022 European Championships in his home country was followed by the sensational World Championship title the following year. Concluding his tenure, Germany finished fourth at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Bayern Munich announced only on Wednesday that managing director Marko Pesic will be leaving the BBL league leaders at his own request at the end of the year.
